Surfing
Australia

A field guide to the coast — waves, culture & the people who ride them

From the cold power of the Southern Ocean to the warm points of the east coast, this is where to paddle out, when the surf is firing, and how to do it safely.

Australia didn't invent surfing — but few places have taken it so completely to heart, from a Hawaiian's board demonstration to a nation of beaches.

A surfing nation

Born on the sand at Freshwater, carried by the volunteers in red and yellow.

Modern board-riding arrived here with Hawaiian Olympian Duke Kahanamoku, who demonstrated it at Sydney's Freshwater Beach in the summer of 1914–15. Around it grew something uniquely Australian — the volunteer surf lifesaving movement, the Easter pilgrimage to Bells, the surfwear brands born in a Torquay garage. Surfing isn't a pastime here; it's part of the coast's identity.

Bells Beach

Intermediate–Advanced·Reef point break·Best autumn–winter

The amphitheatre of Australian surfing. When a big Southern Ocean swell wraps into the Bowl under an offshore northerly, the right-hander that has hosted the Easter pro since 1962 shows exactly why it's a pilgrimage.

Snapper Rocks & the Superbank

One of the longest, most perfect sand-bottom point waves on earth — a rippable right that can run from Snapper all the way towards Kirra. Flawless, and famously crowded. Cyclone season lights it up.

The Pass, Byron Bay

Australia's most-loved longboard wave. Under the lighthouse at the country's easternmost point, a clean right peels for hundreds of metres on a NE–E swell — mellow enough to learn on, long enough to never forget.

Learn to read the surf
safely & confidently

The Australian coast is as powerful as it is beautiful, and conditions change by the hour. A handful of habits keeps every session safe — swim and surf between the flags, learn to spot a rip, and check the surf before you paddle out. Here's where to start.

Red and yellow surf lifesaving flags planted on an Australian patrolled beach

Flags

Swim and surf between the flags

Red-and-yellow flags mark the patrolled, safest stretch of beach. Board riders stay outside the swimming area; a red flag means the beach is closed.

Rips

Spot the rip, don't fight it

Rips look darker, calmer and foamy, moving offshore. If caught: stay calm, raise an arm, float, and go with it or paddle parallel to the beach.

Check

Know before you go
